Consistently in history when people begin to spiritually turn away from the living God and run after other gods, They will eventually go into a total moral free-fall.
You see it with the Incas, Mayans, in Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Medes and Persians, in the Grecian culture, and the Roman culture.
We see it in the history of Western Europe when the church went monastic and began building monasteries all across Europe and they seeking to live behind concrete walls.
All of the arts, literature and education were locked up behind these walls. This is why that era is called the Dark Ages, because the light went out in Europe and Europe went into a moral free-fall.
The Reformation brought the light back.
But in the enlightenment period, instead of going back to the foundations of the Reformation and the Word of God, they went back to Athens, to the writings of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle and once again Europe fell into a moral free-fall.
Each time this would happen, God would raise up a man or woman who was walking mighty in the Holy Spirit and they would begin proclaiming the uncompromising Word of God and there would come a spiritual awakening.
Moses, the prophets, John the Baptist, John Hus, Martin Luther, John Wesley, Jonathan Edwards, Charles Finney, D.L. Moody.
This is what America needs today!
We don’t need churches that can seat thousands with smoke and better lights and sound systems.
We need the Holy Spirit and fire.
If modern, contemporary Christianity really transforms lives, why is America on this moral free-fall?
We have the best music in the history of the church. We have the most glorious buildings and sound systems than ever before. And we have churches of thousands all across this nation.
But it is exactly what Jesus said to the Pharisees.
“You shut up the kingdom of God to men and you’re not going in yourself.”
There is something I remember about the old days, the old ways; a difference about the church back then.
I remember when I came to salvation and I ran down to the old bull-pine altar in Sanders, ID, at the old campground. I knelt at the bull pine altar, kneeling in wood chips.
I prayed for a few minutes and I started to get up and this big hand pushed me down and this deep voice said to me, “Pray ’til you get through, son. Pray ’til you get through.”
I didn’t know what that meant. I only knew one prayer to pray, so I knelt there and prayed that same prayer again. As I started to get up, that hand pushed me back down again and that deep voice said to me, “Pray ’til you get through, son. Pray ’til you get through.”
I didn’t know what to do, so I prayed that same prayer over and over. And when I started to get up, one more time he pushed me down. But when he pushed me down, something broke inside.
I wasn’t getting an inoculation, I was getting spiritual transformation!
Today we pray this easy, little prayer and then say, “You’re saved.”
Are they really, or do they just have an inoculation?
What we need in the church today is the presence of the Holy Spirit that will transform lives!
