The word of the Lord came to the prophet Jeremiah in a profound statement that carries a vital message for this generation.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; and before you were born I sanctified you, and I ordained you a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5 MEV).
Let’s unpackage this statement from Almighty God and discover the profound message it has for us today.
Three Amazing Things the Bible Says About Human Life
1. God knew Jeremiah before he was even formed in his mother’s womb.
How is that possible?
Ephesians 1:4-5 declares, “Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ according to the good pleasure of His will” (NKJV).
The Apostle Paul wrote to his spiritual son Timothy, “Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the Gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began” (2 Timothy 1:8-9 NKJV).
God has a purpose and destiny for your life.
He chose to redeem you, sanctify you, and adopt you as His child before time began and before He created the world.
Psalm 139:15-16 explains how God made that possible. “My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, and intricately put together in the lowers parts of the earth. Your eyes saw me unformed, yet in Your book all my days were written, before any of them came into being” (MEV).
God has a specific blueprint He has drawn for every human being that will ever be born. He wrote that blueprint complete with a purpose and a destiny for every person in a book.
Heavenly Father wrote that book before He created time and space and before He created planet earth as the dwelling place for mankind.
God had your name written in His book beside a specific blueprint, purpose and destiny for your life.
You are unique and special because you are the only you that will ever live.
2. God personally formed Jeremiah in the womb.
That may seem extreme and impractical to the natural mind.
There are multiple passages in the Holy Scripture that confirm God does exactly that; not only for special people like the prophet Jeremiah but for every person.
- God had closed the womb of Rachel and Hannah but opened their womb in answer to their prayers (Genesis 30:2, 22; 1 Samuel 1:5-6).
- Job declared it is God who formed him in his mother’s womb as He does all of mankind (Job 31:13-15).
- The prophet Isaiah declares in 44:2- 24 and 49:5 it is God who forms mankind in their mother’s womb.
There are no accidents or mistaken births.
Someone may exclaim, “But, my mom had no plans for getting pregnant. She didn’t want a child. I was an accident.” But, God planned for that child to be conceived and born and He has a purpose and destiny for that child’s life.
His hand formed you in your mother’s womb.
He created you according to His blueprint and divine purpose and destiny.
He left nothing out that is not absolutely necessary for your life. Nor did He put anything in that is not according to His purpose and desitiny for your life.
“But now, thus says the Lord who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine.”
Almighty God created you and formed you in your mother’s womb. He calls you by name. He loves you so greatly that He redeemed you from sin and adopted you back into His family so you can fulfill the purpose and destiny for which He created you.
3. Before Jeremiah was born, while he was still in the womb, God sanctified him and ordained him to be a prophet.
God had an established purpose and destiny for his life while he was still in the womb.
“Listen to me, O coastlands, and pay attention, you peoples from afar. The Lord called me from the womb; from the body of my mother He named me… Now says the Lord, who formed me from the womb to be His servant, to bring Jacob back to Him, so that Israel might be gather to Him (yet I am honored in the eyes of the Lord, and my God is my strength), He says It is a light thing that you should be My servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restored the preserved ones of Israel: I will also make you a light to the nations so that My salvation may reach to the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 49:1-6 MEV).
We know this passage from the Book of Isaiah is speaking specifically of the Lord Jesus Christ.
However, there are many passages of Scripture that make it abundantly clear God not only had a calling upon the life of the Lord Jesus Christ while He was still in Mary’s womb but He has a calling and purpose for every human being while they are still in their mother’s womb.
- We see this in Esau and Jacob (Genesis 25:21-27)
- Samson (Judge 13:1-25)
- John the Baptist (Luke 1:15)
- The Apostle Paul (Galatians 1:15) and
- Timothy (2 Timothy 1:8-10), just to name a few.
What is the significance to this generation?
Human beings are unique from all other forms of life.
There is no other form of life equal to mankind; not because of we have survived natural selection more efficiently than other forms of life.
We are unique and distinct because we are created by Almighty God in His own likeness.
We are not an evolved higher form of life but created by Him to be in relationship with Him as sons and daughters. He has appointed mankind to serve as stewards over everything He has created.
God has given human beings authority over all other forms of life and created things to rule and to have dominion (Genesis 1:26-28; Psalm 8:4-8; Hebrews 2:5-9).
Human life should be honored and revered as sacred and holy.
We hold a special and distinct position in all of creation.
The Psalmist declared, “I will praise you, for You made me with fear and wonder; marvelous are Your works, and You know me completely” (Psalm 139:14).
In all of creation there is no being honored, revered and exalted above mankind, except God!
“What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet” (Psalm 8:4-6 NKJV).
Human life is not to be thought of in the same terms and value as a whale, eagle, bear, or a house pet.
That is devaluing human life beneath the exalted place that God has placed mankind; “You made him a little lower than the angels and you have crowned him with glory and honor.”
Every human life is significant.
From the womb to the moment a person breaths their last, a human being’s life is significant, precious and sacred.
Sickness, disease, disability, poverty, circumstances of conception or events surrounding the birth; do not diminish the significance of a human life.
The infant in the womb is sacred and holy human life at the moment of conception.
John the Baptist, six months old in his mother’s womb, recognized the Son of God only days old in the womb of Mary (Luke 1:36-45).
The significance and worth of a person’s life at every age is recorded time and again in Scripture. The worth and value of the aged and the strength and importance of the young are declared.
The spirit and soul of a person is not diminished or limited by dementia or a coma. It is only the physical body that is limited.
Who can explain what God may be doing and how the Holy Spirit may be ministering to the person who is unable to physically communicate but is very much spiritually alive.
The worth and the value of that person is not measured by the physical capabilities but the significance that Almighty God has placed upon their life and continues to proclaim.
It is a marvel that Almighty God chose of His own volition to create a new species in His own image and to delegate to them the stewardship of all He had created.
It is astounding that He chose of His own will to redeem mankind after they had rebelled and defiled the very life He had created.
The very work of redemption and the covenant that reconciles and restores a human being to God’s creative design and relationship shouts the greatness and the sacred value of human life.
