Culture has always presented ideas that challenge biblical truth.
- Sometimes those ideas arrive through political movements.
- Sometimes through philosophy.
- Sometimes through education or entertainment.
- And sometimes they come wrapped in language that sounds compassionate, just, and even Christian.
That is why Scripture repeatedly warns believers to exercise discernment.
The apostle Paul wrote:
“See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to human tradition… rather than according to Christ.” (Colossians 2:8)
Every generation faces its own “siren songs“—ideas that sound appealing but ultimately draw people away from God’s truth.
Today, many Christians are asking how they should evaluate modern ideologies such as Critical Theory, Critical Race Theory, Intersectionality, and the broader woke movement.
The answer begins in the same place every biblical evaluation should begin:
What does God’s Word say?
The Lesson Behind the Song of the Sirens
In Greek mythology, sailors feared the Sirens.
These mythical creatures sang beautiful songs that captivated passing ships. Drawn by the irresistible music, sailors would steer toward the sound, only to wreck their ships on hidden rocks.
Odysseus famously survived by having his crew plug their ears with beeswax while he was tied securely to the mast of the ship. Although he desperately wanted to follow the alluring music, his crew refused to release him until they had safely passed the danger.
While the story itself is mythology, it illustrates an important biblical principle.
Not everything that sounds attractive leads to truth.
Some voices promise wisdom while leading people into spiritual danger.
Scripture Warns Against Seductive Voices
The book of Proverbs repeatedly warns about seductive influences that appeal to the heart while leading toward destruction.
Solomon writes:
“For the lips of an immoral woman drip honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as wormwood…” (Proverbs 5:3–4)
The imagery extends beyond physical temptation.
Throughout Scripture, God’s people are warned against being seduced by false teaching, worldly philosophies, and ideas that compete with His truth.
Discernment is essential because deception rarely appears dangerous at first.
It often sounds reasonable.
- Compassionate.
- Progressive.
- Even biblical.
Every Worldview Has a Foundation
One of the most important principles Christians can remember is this:
Every worldview is built upon foundational beliefs.
Ideas do not exist in isolation.
They grow from assumptions about humanity, morality, justice, truth, and authority.
That is why Scripture calls believers to test everything rather than accept ideas simply because they are popular.
Before embracing any cultural movement, Christians should ask:
- What is its foundation?
- Where did these ideas originate?
- What view of humanity does it teach?
- What authority determines truth?
- Does it align with Scripture?
Those questions matter because Christianity begins with the authority of God’s Word—not with changing cultural opinions.
The Need for Biblical Discernment
Many modern movements seek to address genuine problems such as injustice, prejudice, and broken relationships.
Christians should never ignore those realities.
The Bible clearly teaches that every person is created in the image of God and deserves dignity, compassion, and love.
Yet recognizing real problems does not mean every proposed solution is biblical.
Followers of Christ are called to evaluate both the problem and the proposed answer through the lens of Scripture.
The motivation behind an idea, its philosophical foundation, and its ultimate goal all deserve careful examination.
Discernment requires asking not only:
“Is this addressing a real issue?”
But also:
“Is it doing so according to biblical truth?”
True Reconciliation Begins with the Gospel
Scripture teaches that genuine reconciliation begins with changed hearts.
The gospel addresses the deepest human problem—not merely social division, but separation from God because of sin.
As people are transformed by Christ, they are also transformed in how they love, forgive, and serve one another.
This does not minimize injustice.
Rather, it insists that lasting reconciliation cannot be separated from the transforming work of the Holy Spirit and the authority of God’s Word.
The gospel changes people from the inside out.
And changed people change communities.
Test Every Idea by Scripture
Christians are not called to reject ideas simply because they are new.
Nor are we called to embrace them simply because they are popular.
Instead, Scripture commands us to examine every teaching carefully.
Our ultimate authority is not politics.
Not culture.
Not philosophy.
Not public opinion.
Our authority is the inspired, infallible Word of God.
That means every movement, every ideology, and every cultural trend must ultimately answer one question:
Does it agree with Scripture?
If it does not, Christians must remain firmly anchored to God’s truth rather than being carried along by every changing current of culture.
This Is Only the Beginning
Questions surrounding Critical Theory, Critical Race Theory, Intersectionality, and other contemporary ideologies deserve thoughtful, careful examination.
In this first message, we’ve considered why Christians must evaluate every worldview through the authority of Scripture.

Final Thoughts
Every generation hears voices competing for its attention.
Some promise freedom.
Some promise justice.
Some promise fulfillment.
But only one voice leads to life.
Jesus said:
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” (John 10:27)
May we be believers who know His voice so well that no other voice can lead us astray.
