It is impossible for a person who is drowning to save themselves.
They must be able to swim adequately to take themselves safely to shore.
If they can swim well enough to take themselves to safety, where is the need for a lifeguard to save them? The person is drowning because they cannot save themselves.
Similarly, a person cannot get themselves to heaven because every human being is earthy; that is of the earth.
Earthly things cannot attain Heaven. “Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption” (1Corinthians 15:50 NKJV).
Every human being is born of their earthy parents, earthy.
We carry their DNA; their racial identity; their facial and structural features; and many of their character strengths and weaknesses. Thus the old saying, “They are a chip off the old block.”
Often it is said, “They are just like their father” or “They are just like their mother.”
There is yet another parental trait that is carried in the human DNA.
“…For I, the Lord Your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me” (Exodus 20:5 NKJV).
King David recorded it like this. “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me” (Psalm 51:5 NKJV).
Not only does the human DNA carry the racial, biological, and psychological characteristics of the parents to the children and grandchildren, it carries the nature of sin and iniquity of the parents to children and grandchildren.
It is an all-too-familiar story.
- The father is angry and abusive, so is the son.
- The mother is insecure and a “worry wort”, so is the daughter.
- A parent is an alcoholic or drug addict, so is the child.
The Apostle Paul lamented, “There is none righteous, no not even one… for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:10, 23).
None one escapes being of the earth, earthy; and sinful in nature.
The resulting tragedy is no human being can “inherit the kingdom of God.” But, God does not want anyone to perish (2Peter 3:9).
So how does an earthy human being make Heaven their home?
Although, earth cannot inherit Heaven, the kingdom of God; Heaven can attain earth and take us back to the Kingdom of God. That is exactly what happened.
Most people in all religions are doing their very best to try and earn their way to Heaven by good works. They diligently seek to keep the disciplines and requirements of their religion.
If they are not religious, they are trying to treat their neighbors with kindness and give to charities. Many in the Christian faith are doing their best to keep the Ten Commandments.
Everyone who is seeking to reach Heaven is this manner are drowning men and women flailing in the water trying to save their life.
The harder they work at beating the water with their religious efforts and their good works, the more exhausted they become, and the farther from safety they drift.
Earth cannot attain Heaven.
But, Heaven can attain earth and take us back to Heaven.
Easter, Resurrection Sunday is all about, Heaven coming to earth and rescuing the earthy, sinful human race and taking them back to Heaven.
Almighty God came to earth in the person of Jesus Christ.
He became a man, earthy, so He could be tempted in every way that we are tempted, but without sin. He accomplished that amazing feat.
He was found innocent under every examination.
He went to the garden on the night of His betrayal.
He faced the same enemy to whom Adam and Eve yielded in the garden millennia before.
He left that garden as a prisoner, but victorious in that moment; only to face the enemy of sin and death on the cross and in the tomb.
His death on the cross paid the ransom price for sin, “for the wages of sin is death.”
His burial placed the sin of mankind in the grave to never live again.
Early Sunday morning Jesus Christ ripped from the hands of Lucifer the keys of death and hell. He emptied Paradise of all the righteous ones who had died from Abel to thief on the cross.
He led them out of the grave and they accompanied Him back to Heaven.
Now this is the promise. “But, as many as received Him, to them He gave the right power to become the children of God, to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12 NKJV).
“Most assuredly I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life”(John 5:24 NKJV).
How amazing is that!
We cannot save ourselves.
We never could.
But Almighty God has done everything necessary and sent to us the eternal Lifeguard who rescues us from drowning in sin and takes us safely to Heaven.
All we must do is believe in Him and receive His saving work in our life, as a gift, by faith.
