How many times have you made a New Year’s Resolution to read through the Bible in a year, began in January full of fire and fervor, only to fizzle out by February?
You’re not alone.
In a world scrambling for your attention with endless scrolls, notifications, and noise, the idea of reading through the entire Bible in one year feels daunting, even impossible.
But what if I told you it’s not just doable, but transformative?
This year, discover 3 reasons to read through the Bible that will ignite your faith, sharpen your spiritual senses, and draw you closer to God’s voice than ever before.
3 Reasons to Read Through the Bible This Year
In my walk with the Lord for over 60 years, I have found that consistent, daily time spent in the Word of God is a powerful weapon.
Daily reading God’s Word is not only essential for consistent victory as a disciple of Jesus Christ, but also in renewing our minds so that we have the mind of Christ.
Although God’s ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts, Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 2:16 that we can have the mind of Christ.
“For ‘who has known the mind of the LORD that he may instruct Him?‘ But we have the mind of Christ.”
This is only possible when we take intentional steps to renew our minds, and we do that through memorizing and meditating on God’s Word.
1. Reading the Bible strengthens your relationship with God
The only way we get to know God is through the Bible.
While we commune with Him through prayer, the only way He has chosen to reveal Himself and His character is through His Word.
By slowly reading through the Bible day by day, we get a complete view of who God is: His love and grace, His holiness and righteousness, His jealousy and anger. It is all right there on the pages of His Word, and through His Word, we really get to know who He is in living color.
And getting to know Him changes how we approach Him. It changes our prayer life and our ministry, and shapes our decisions and worldview.
2. Reading the Bible helps you to grow spiritually
How do you bear spiritual fruit in your life?
By allowing the Holy Spirit to dictate your actions, decisions, and worldview through the prism of His Word.
The reason why so many Christians flounder spiritually is because they are ignorant as to what the Word of God actually says about the crucial issues affecting their lives each day.
But as we daily pick up God’s Word and begin reading it as it was meant to be read, as a whole book and not as individual verses here and there, we realize just how relevant the Bible is to our daily life in the 21st century!
And as we begin to mold our lives around its principles and commands, we will begin to grow as we never have before.
3. Reading the Bible keeps us from bad doctrine
One of the dangers of randomly picking verses to read in the Bible, without reading the entire chapter and book, is that we don’t get the full context of what the Holy Spirit was trying to say.
Very much like how when a newspaper or magazine may choose to take a sentence from an interview out of the entire context in which is was spoken to make it say something that the person never actually said, so we sometimes do with individual verses in the Bible. We take them out of context to fit our own personal belief system or theology.
But the Bible was never meant to fit our belief system, rather our belief system must come into agreement with God’s Word.
Here are 5 Bible verses that are often misquoted.
