Being light in a culture of darkness is a demanding challenge. Nevertheless, a challenge Jesus means for every disciple to face with courage, steadfastness, and resolve.
As the culture of the world gets darker, the light of the disciple should become brighter.
As the lights of a city located on hill can be seen for miles in the darkness of night, so the light of a disciple of Jesus Christ should be visible and piercing in the deep darkness of a hedonistic, nihilistic, and humanistic culture.
Can anything be more piercing and brighter than a 3D/4D HD ultrasound of a 20 week old preborn?
You see ears, noise, eyes, hands and arms, feet and legs moving, heart beating, brain, kidneys, bladder, stomach, and genitals. They are indeed a human being. Although a culture of death seeks to deny the preborn is viable life, even insisting upon abortion up to the time of birth and extinguishing life for days after birth, into this dark culture must come the light of truth.
God alone holds the authority over life and death.
He created human life and continues to form each person in the womb with a purpose and a destiny He has written. God has appointed the day of death for each human being.
“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7 NKJV)
“For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.” (Psalm 139:13-17 NKJV)
“And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27 NKJV)
“Lord, make me to know my end, and what is the measure of my days, that I may know how frail I am. Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths, and my age is as nothing before You; certainly every man at his best state is but vapor.” (Psalm 39:4-5 NKJV)
How does one bring a piercing light into a sexualized culture that worships nudity, exalts the goddess principle, and exploits the sexual identity of every person, even innocent children?
There is only one way.
“Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Jesus met one woman who was seeking her daily supply of water at the well of Sychar. She had been married five times and was currently living with a man, unmarried. Jesus did not rail at her, condemn her, or speak judgmentally to her.
He offered her life-giving water.
Jesus shined the light of Heaven into her darkness, and it brought hope, forgiveness, and deliverance. She told everyone she knew. The whole city came to see “the Light of the World” and many of them believed on Jesus Christ (John 4:1-42).
Here is the danger this sexualized, secularized, paganized culture of the world is facing.
When those who have light choose to hide it or even partially hide it, those living in darkness are left with no source of hope, no avenue of forgiveness, and no means of deliverance.
When the religious leaders of Jerusalem and the government of the Roman Empire threatened the early disciples of Jesus Christ, they did not compromise or go into hiding, because they were politically incorrect and threatened with legal action.
They did not look for ways to adjust to the politically correct culture or seek for ways to match the Scriptures with the “new cultural norm.”
They continued to preach the uncompromised Word of God in the marketplace, teach in the homes, and make disciples of all men and women. They did not cover the light, shelter the light, or dim the light for fear of being arrested, put in jail, or worse.
The results were amazing. “You have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine… These that have turned the world upside down have come here too” (Acts 5:28; Acts 17:6 NKJV).
The boldness and uncompromising steadfastness of those disciples brought the light of Jesus Christ into that pagan, sexualized culture. They brought hope, forgiveness, and deliverance to those living in satanic bondage.
That is power of a piercing light.
Jesus was teaching in the temple area, one morning. A group of the religious leaders brought a woman and sat her before Him.
“This woman was caught in adultery, in the very act,” they said.
“Moses law says stone her. What do you say?” Jesus words were enlightening. “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.”
They all walked away, leaving the woman sitting in front of Jesus.
He looked at her and asked, “Where are your accusers? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, Lord,” she answered. “Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more,” Jesus responded.
Then Jesus turned to the crowd He had been teaching that morning.
They had been watching all of this take place, He said to them, “I am the light of the world, he who follows Me, shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” The woman sitting at His feet was no longer an adulterous woman, her life was totally transformed.
She was now a woman filled with the “light of life” (John 8:1-12).
Every disciple of Jesus Christ carries that light within them. When one is born again by the regenerating power of the Holy Spirit, the light of Jesus Christ fills their life. It is the light that brings life where death reigns. It is the light that breaks the chains of sin.
It is the light that drives out the darkness of deception, distortion, and delusion.
Arise disciple of Jesus Christ in this sexualized, secularized, pagan culture and “Let your light so shine before men…”
